Onion & Bell Peppers in Tangy Tomato Gravy

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

If yours is the kind of household that likes eating rotis/phulkas everyday, making different kinds of side dishes each day must be a tiresome task. Here's a quick gravy that tastes good with rotis/phulkas. It does not require too many vegetables either & is rather easy to make. This gravy is made quite often at my home. It is more of a South Indian kind of gravy & is made using Rasam Powder which makes it quite different from the usual ones .. It tastes awesome ...

Preparation Time: 20 Mins

Ingredients:
  1. 2 onions - cut lengthwise
  2. 3 tomatoes - chopped finely
  3. 2 bell peppers/capsicum - cut lengthwise
  4. 2 green chillies - slit lengthwise
  5. 2 tbsp - Rasam powder - Store Bought or Home-Made
  6. A small lump of jaggery
  7. Salt as per taste
  8. Mustard seeds
  9. Curry leaves
  10. 2 tsp Oil
  11. 1 tsp Channa Dal
  12. 1 tsp Urad Dal
Method:
  • Heat Oil in a wok, add mustard seeds
  • Once it splutters, add green chillies & curry leaves . Later add Channa Dal & Urad Dal
  • Once they start changing color, Add onions & saute till they turn pink.
  • Add tomatoes & Rasam Powder & saute for a couple of minutes
  • Add Bell peppers & saute completely cooked. Bell Peppers must retain their crunch.
  • Add a small lump of jaggery & salt as per taste
  • Add enough water to get the right consistency
  • Cook on low flame for 5 mins
Mix well & Serve HOT with Rotis/Rice .. Enjoi !!!!

NOTE:
  • You can omit Bell Peppers, if you wish to.
  • You can add Red Chilli Powder instead of Rasam Powder, But Rasam Powder gives this a distinct taste.
