Akki Tari is 'Broken Rice Grits' & those of you who are not familiar with it, It resembles broken wheat in texture. 

It is very common to make Upma or Uppittu with Broken Rice in most Kannada households .. You add Avarekai or Flat beans & it becomes even more special ..

As a child, I wasn't too fond of Akki Tari Uppittu & even more so because I remember that my grandmother made it quite often & then all of a sudden in my 20s I found myself craving for a bowl of Hot Akki Tari Uppittu & quite specifically the one made along with Avarekalu & Sabsige Soppu 

This is such a classic combination .. You got to try this, if you haven't. 


Avarekalu - Hyacinth Beans


Unlike regular Uppittu, we don't use mustard seeds, Urad & Chana Dal & Onions here. 

This Upma is tempered using only Cumin seeds, Curry Leaves & crushed Black Pepper which gives it such a nice taste 

I add a bunch of finely chopped Dill leaves, which lends a very beautiful flavour to the Upma .. This is optional though but Highly recommended

Broken Rice Upma takes longer to cook than the regular Rava Upma & it needs more water too .. Every cup of broken rice needs about 3 cups of water to cook completely

Let's Make 'Akki Tari Uppittu' with 'Avarekai' .. Shall We??


Serves 3 

You Will Need:

  • 1 cup Broken Rice/Akki Tari
  • 1/2 cup Avarekaalu (Lilva Papdi)
  • 1 Bunch Sabsige Soppu (Dill Leaves)
  • 1/4 Cup Grated coconut (Fresh/Frozen)
  • Salt as per taste
  • Fresh Coriander for Garnish (Optional)
To Temper
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1.5 teaspoon Greshly cracked Pepper 
  • 2 Green Chilies - Chopped
  • 4-5 Curry Leaves 
  • 2 tablespoon Ghee
How To:

Pressure cook or boil Avarekalu or flat beans in salted water. Drain & set aside
In a pan, dry roast Broken Rice for a couple of mins .. Don't allow it to change color

Heat Desi Ghee in a heavy bottom pan/kadhai .. Splutter cumin seeds & half of the cracked pepper. Add green chilies & curry Leavea & saute for about 20 secs.

Add Dill leaves & saute for about 2 mins. Add 3 cups of water into the pan, Add salt & bring it to a boil. As the water begins to boil, slowly add the beans & gently add broken rice as you keep stirring the mixture continuously to avoid any lumps.

Stir the mixture well. Add additional water if needed & cover with a lid for about 2-3 mins.

Add grated coconut, remaining cracked pepper & mix well to incorporate. Turn off the stove & transfer to a serving bowl .. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander if using  

Serve HOT  with some Yogurt/Chutney Pudi/Pickle along with Upma .. Enjoi !!! 

And, Don't forget the Filter Coffee ...


NOTE:

Akki Tari is different from Idli Rava or Idli Tari. Akki Tari is made out of raw rice while Idli Tari is made out of parboiled rice. Do not get confused between the two. You cannot substitute Akki Tari with Idli Rava/Idli Tari  

How To Source Akki Tari? Can It Be Made At Home?

In The South Akki Tari is easily available in grocery stores. It is known as Arisi Rava in Tamil. 

It can be made at home as well. You will need to wash Raw Rice (You can use Sona Masuri) in a colander a couple of times. Spread the washed rice on a clean cotton cloth & dry it for a few hours or over night 

Then Grind the fully fried rice grains into a coarse Rava like texture using a mixer grinder. Roast the rava before using
